How to update JournalPHP

An update pulls the new code, rebuilds the containers and runs migrations.

Before updating, read the release notes: some versions require manual steps. In production, back up the database.

Local environment

bash
git pull
docker compose up -d --build

Production

If new variables appear in .env.example after git pull, add them to .env before the build.

bash
git pull
docker compose -f docker-compose.prod.yml build
docker compose -f docker-compose.prod.yml up -d

If something goes wrong

bash
docker compose -f docker-compose.prod.yml logs app
docker compose -f docker-compose.prod.yml exec app php artisan migrate:status
docker compose -f docker-compose.prod.yml exec app php artisan optimize:clear

In the local environment, the same commands run without -f docker-compose.prod.yml. Other common problems are described in Troubleshooting.
